Research

You can do some research before you travel:

  • Weather
Check the weather in the area you plan to visit.
Travel Planner:

City or Postcode
Continent:
Temperature °C:
Weather:
  • Maps, Books, Newspapers and Magazines
Looking at the maps of the area will give you a good idea of the types of walking available in the local and surrounding area.
  • Larger newsagents sell foreign newspapers and others will order them for you.

There are also lots of guide and travel books with information about walking and hiking in the Alps.

Buy before you travel so you plan what to do and see. See Books and Maps.

  • Radio and TV
A few radio stations from northern Europe can be received in the south of the UK on medium wave (AM band) of 531-1602kHz and you can receive a lot on short wave bands.
  • If you have a satellite receiver you may be able to get a few foreign stations.  With a steerable satellite dish there are a large number of Free to Air (FTA) radio and television stations available.

Click here for details of how to install your own satellite receiver and steerable dish.

  • Language
You will find English speaking people in most resorts, but why not learn some basic words and phrases.
